Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
Hello everybody

I've been pondering the following for a while now, without success. I've googled as much as possible, but I can't seem to get any further.

My main music set up is to stream FLAC files from a QNAP TS112 to various Sonos players. These FLAC files are normally 16 bit, 44100 hz, with 1000 x 1000 album art images saved to each file (although some art images are smaller, and some are larger).

I'm also streaming to a Roberts 93i, using Minimserver from the QNAP to an android phone, and Bubble upnp from the phone to the Roberts.

The album art is showing perfectly on the phone, but isn't then showing on the Roberts. I know that this is due to the Roberts having a maximum art size of 640 x 480, but I can't work out whether Minimserver can transcode the art, or whether Bubble should be doing this.

I have seen the Roberts display the art when I've had some particularly small bits of album art saved - but I don't want to move away from my standard of 1000 x 1000.

I've been through both applications, and various settings, but I don't seem to have much luck.

Any help or thoughts would be very much appreciated.

RE: Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
MinimServer always sends the image in the file with no resizing.

Implementing resizing and getting it to do "the right thing" in all cases is tricky because MinimServer doesn't know which device(s) will render the image. I could implement an option to downsize everything to 640 x 480 but this would reduce image quality on your phone and any renderer devices that are capable of higher resolutions.

RE: Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
Hi Simon

Thanks for this, and I take your point about resizing album art reducing the quality of the image.

The Roberts display only shows the album art with an image about the size of a postage stamp, so the loss of quality wouldn't be too much to bear.

The option to choose the size displayed would be useful, but it's not a major issue. It would certainly be useful for me in this instance, but the loss of quality may be a problem for other users.

Regards

MB

The problem is that it would not be possible to reduce the size on the Roberts without also reducing the size and losing quality when the image is displayed on your phone and any other renderer devices you might have.

RE: Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
Hi Simon, this is not a feature that I would be interested in, but all the same, if the render is reported to the server, and conveniently ignoring the develop effort, I would have thought it would be possible to develop profiles that determine how content should be sent to each device category.

RE: Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
The UPnP/DLNA protocol requires the server to specify the size of the image (small/medium/large) when it provides the image to the control point. At this stage, the server doesn't know which renderer will be used.

Would it not be possible to take an approach similar to other servers, where you can specify profiles for static IPs? Most of the time devices that need specialised profiles will be running on static IPs. I have a device (BeoSound 5), that due to its terrible software, requires lower resolution artwork in order to not lock up.

It doesn't help if the server knows the IP address of the renderer because the album art URI is sent to the control point, not the renderer.

Can you send small, medium and large versions to control point. If you did could the control point then send a suitable one to renderer?

RE: Can Minimserver Resize Album Art?
I am confused, isn't this a 'simple' interaction between the server (MiniServer) and the client (Media Player). Or is there a server, renderer and control point?

UPnP utilises HTTP, so surely the referrer and the ability to dynamically generate the response from that is enough to deal with 'profiles'. Apologies if I have oversimplified this, UPnP is not something I know well.
